I needed this!
by Dr. Charles Stanley
Many people equate success with acquisition of wealth or fame. However, from a spiritual standpoint, the word means something altogether different: it can be defined as becoming the person God desires each of us to be. In fact, Hebrews 13:5 says, "Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.’" But how do we become the people the Lord wants us to be? We begin by having a proper understanding of God’s will for our lives. You and I must make His goals our own.
A goal is a purpose, aim, or sense of direction—like the finish line of a race, or a student’s diploma. Goals are determined by what we value and desire, and we spend our time and energy to reach them. As Christians, we lay aside our own ambitions and submit to God’s plan for our lives. Throughout the Bible, we see this pattern. God gave His people specific objectives and promised that they wouldn’t have to pursue those goals alone. He Himself would be there to support His followers and provide whatever they needed to fulfill the mission. And so it is with you and me today.
Some people incorrectly believe that setting goals is unbiblical or unspiritual. But the Scriptures talk about growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). God places in every believer's heart an insatiable hunger and thirst for more of Him and His Word.
While our relationship with Him brings us genuine fulfillment (Phil. 4:11-12), we often find an undercurrent of dissatisfaction in our hearts. We long to know more, to better understand His ways, and to develop deeper intimacy with Him. So we make it our goal to know and love Him better than we do.
One of the most goal-oriented people in the Bible is the apostle Paul. He had an overwhelming sense of purpose, direction, and commitment. God used that drive by sending him to preach the gospel to the Gentiles and eventually, through His writings, to the entire world. Undoubtedly, Paul asked the Lord to reveal how to communicate widely and effectively, and then, on his missionary journeys, implemented what he learned. The apostle's example shows us that when we focus on a God-given goal, the Lord will move heaven and earth to help us achieve it.
Paul’s ultimate ambition was to know Jesus in a deep, personal way, and to be conformed to His likeness (Phil. 3:8-11). Our goal, like the apostle's, should be to experience the power of Christ’s resurrection in our daily lives. And we should seek to walk in the Spirit as we serve Him. This is God’s desire for us—to shape our character to mirror Christ’s (Rom. 8:29).
Paul so dedicated himself to this goal that he was willing to die, if necessary, to achieve it. In Philippians 3:12, he writes, "Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which I also was laid hold of by Christ Jesus." As a result of such focus and determination, you and I can read Paul’s letter to the Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and all of his other epistles. These writings contain awesome revelations and a profound understanding of the Christian life. Think about the riches the church would have lost if Paul had decided to follow his own ambitions. His faithfulness has already affected countless lives for eternity.
Goal-setting is applicable for every child of God—not just for the apostle Paul, your pastor, or “professional” Christians. Your heavenly Father has a purpose for your life, and He has planned the best for you. The Lord desires that you succeed in whatever He has called you to be and do. When your purpose and priorities are in line with His and you set goals accordingly, God will use you in mighty ways. That, my friends, is the key to godly success.

Life Explained in an Email
---------------------------------------------------------
On the first day, God created the dog and said:
'Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in orwalks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.'
The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten yearsand I'll give you back the other ten?'
So God agreed.
On the second day, God created the monkey and said:
'Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give youa twenty-year life span.'
The monkey said: ' Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty longtime to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?'
And God agreed.
On the third day, God created the cow and said:
'You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer underthe sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. Forthis, I will give you a life span of sixty years.'
The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixtyyears. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?'
And God agreed again.
On the fourth day, God created man and said:
'Eat, sleep, play , marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give youtwenty years.'
But man said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, theforty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the doggave back; that makes eighty, okay?'
'Okay,' said God, 'You asked for it.'
So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support ourfamily. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain thegrandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch andbark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you.

Week #47 Do What I Say
I hope everyone is doing well. This week's Bible study is up! Check it out when you get a chance. And thanks to all who posted comments last week and the previous weeks. Just let it flow...great thing about commenting on a blog is hopefully you feel free to say whatever the Lord has laid on your heart about the topic.
I think it is very helpful to see what other people have to say about the topics we talk about on this blog. It is good to see how other people have struggled and handled different situations.

From One Pumpkin to Another
---------------
A woman was asked by a coworker, 'What is it like to be a Christian?'
The coworker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.' God picks you from
the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He
cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.
He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed. Then He carves you a new
smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'

Happy Halloween!
Red Cross Halloween Safety Tips for Kids and Adults
With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighborhoods across America, the American Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday. Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun.
Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
Cross the street only at corners.
Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
Carry a flashlight to light your way.
Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flamable.)
Visit homes that have the porch light on.
Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
Be cautious of animals and strangers.
Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

NOOMA is the new format.
It's short films with communicators that really speak to us.

Fitness...
I decided not to type up a weekly Bible study this week...didn't study up and prepare like I should have (please forgive). I ran across this devotional though and thought it shined a light on a subject not always on the list of Biblical topics.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Are you shaping up or spreading out? Do you eat sensibly and exercise regularly, or do you spend most of your time on the couch with a [bag of cookies] in one hand and a clicker in the other? Are you choosing to treat your body like a temple or a trash heap? How you answer these questions will help determine how long you live and how well you live.
Physical fitness is a choice, a choice that requires discipline--it's as simple as that. So, do yourself this favor; treat your body like a one-of-a-kind gift from God...because that's precisely what your body is.You can't buy good health at a doctor's office--you've got to earn it for yourself.
It is important to set goals because if you do not have a plan, a goal, a direction, a purpose, and a focus, you are not going to accomplish anything for the glory of God.

Took it easy this week and decided to post a story I read in an email I received not too long ago. Some of you may have read it, some of you probably haven't.

Week #24 Scaredy Cat
I wanted to thank all of you for your prayers and concerns for my dad over the past week. It truly means a lot to him and our family.
This past week has really opened my eyes to how fragile life can be and how quickly your entire life can be totally flipped upside down. I can't even begin to imagine the pain and discomfort my dad is and has been experiencing over these past few days.
I can't count the number of things that I have seen God doing through all of this and it is amazing. I hate that this happened to my dad, but it is comforting to know that God has complete control over everything that is going on. When I feel helpless, I know that God is not and that He hasn't and will not leave my dad alone and that makes me smile. God is awesome!
Please keep the prayers coming. We have a long road ahead of us, but light at the end of the tunnel is very bright.

Exam Week
For all of us struggling with exams this week...don't get stressed out! Here are some tips to get you through the week...
Establish a routine | |
Set aside a particular time each day for study and revision and stick to it. | |
Create a study environment | |
This should be away from interruptions and household noise, such as the television. And try not to study on your bed...it is a trap! (haha) | |
Set a timetable | |
With a timetable you can plan to cover all your subjects in an organized way, allotting the appropriate time for each without becoming overwhelmed. | |
Look after yourself | |
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and eat healthy foods. Keep sugary foods to a minimum. Make sure you get enough sleep each night. Regular physical exercise makes you feel great, boosts your energy and helps you relax. So try to keep up regular sporting activities or at least fit in some regular exercise as often as you can. | |
Reward yourself for studying | |
Watch your favorite television program, spend time with your friends, walk to the park and play a sport throughout the week. | |
Have variety in your study program | |
Study different subjects each day and do different types of work during each study session. | |
Avoid interrupting your concentration | |
Have all the appropriate materials with you before you start a session of study to minimize distractions. | |
Test yourself on what you have studied | |
Ask your friends to quiz you on what you have learned. | |
Don't panic now that it is exam time | |
You have been going over this stuff for the past few months...no need to panic now. Try to keep yourself calm, positive and confident. | |
Ask your teachers for guidance | |
Especially if you're having trouble - whether it's grasping a new concept or understanding something you learned earlier in the year. They will be happy to help. |

Living Clean in a Contaminated World
When Satan was cast down from heaven, he was given dominion over earth for a period of time. Known as the father of lies (John 8:44), he opposes anything related to the Lord. Because we are all made in God's image, the Enemy seeks to thwart us. Under his rule, our world has become morally and spiritually contaminated.
We come into the world physically alive but spiritually dead and in rebellion against the Lord (Ephesians 2:1-2). Yet by trusting Jesus as our Savior, we receive a new nature and are adopted into God's family. Before salvation, man is enslaved to sin and unable to free himself. But through the Holy Spirit, believers have the power to say no to wrongdoing and yes to godliness (Titus 2:12).
Because of our new identity as children of God, we can't let ourselves become bound together intimately with unbelievers--we no longer share the same nature or purpose. Followers of Jesus are called to serve as His ambassadors, spreading knowledge of the Savior and living righteous lives. We're to put aside our own desires and instead embrace His. In addition, we must admit when we've sinned and then seek His forgiveness. And of course, we worship the heavenly Father through His Son. These concepts are foreign to someone who doesn't belong to Christ.
We are wise to choose as our most intimate friends and trusted advisers those who have received Jesus Christ as their Savior. How beneficial it is to receive counsel based on Scripture and to have role models who point us toward the Son.

READ: Romans 5:6-11
The verses today describe the mystery of an innocent man dying in place of a guilty one. Would any of us volunteer to endure the deserved punishment of someone else? Maybe we would consider helping a person we considered good or righteous, but Jesus was willing to help the guilty! He voluntarily became our substitute--taking on our sin-debt and enduring the penalty we deserved. God's wrath was poured out on Him for all our sins.
The Savior died on the cross so that we might enter God's family and live with Him forever. because of Jesus' sacrifice, our status has been changed from outsider to child of God, from enemy to beloved, and from stranger to friend. No one could care about us more deeply than that. Jesus is truly our loving friend.

White as Snow
You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.
Forgiveness requires two parties--one to ask for it and the other to give it. Between you and God, you are always on the asking side and He is always on the giving side. Fortunately, if you are sincere, you are assured of God's forgiveness. No matter what mistakes you've made, God promises that He will take the stain of your sins and make it "white as snow."
He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.

Good Friends
READ: 1 Samuel 18:1-4
When David and Jonathan met, they became close friends at once. Their friendship is one of the deepest and closest recorded in the Bible, which is odd when you consider that Jonathan was the king's son (and in line for the throne) and David had been anointed to eventually become king. Jonathan knew this, but he and David were still best friends. They based their friendship on a common commitment to honor God; they let nothing come between them, they drew closer together when their friendship was tested, and they remained friends to the end. There are the marks of a true friend.
A friend is always loyal.

When Less Is More
READ: Job 2:11; Job 16:1-3.
Job's friends were at their best when they showed up, sat with him, and listened without saying a word (see Job 2:12-13). Unfortunately, they then began to lecture Job on why they thought he was suffering and what they thought he should do about it. In the end, they even told Job that his suffering was his own fault. If only they knew the truth (read Job 1-2 for the real reason Job suffered)! A good friend is quick to listen and slow to judge. The words you speak to a friend can heal like a comforting balm or they can wound like an arrow. When your friend is hurting, the best thing you can do is to be there to listen and comfort.
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

A Fruitful Life
God has created us with a longing to know that our presence in this world counts. He also designed us to find the fulfillment of that desire through His Son Jesus Christ.
Dependence on the Lord is central to an abundant life. Trusting Him with all our heart means giving Him control over our families, finances, jobs, and everything else. Today's passage emphasizes how essential trust is to a fruitful life: we are cautioned against being wise in our own eyes and warned twice not to lean on our own understanding (3:5,7). When faced with decisions, it is tempting to gather information and choose the answer we think is right. However, we can't know all the facts or predict with certainty how others will respond. But our Father is omniscient. He "reads" our hearts and perceives every thought (1 Chronicles 28:9). No aspect of our life escapes His notice (Psalm 11:4), and He cares about everyone. That's why He alone is certain which decision will be best for our circumstances.
The abundant life also involves acknowledging the Lord in all we do. Speaking about Him is just part of what it means to give Him recognition. As His children, we are to have a marked resemblance to our heavenly Father...in thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Our priorities are to reflect His, and our plans should fit with His purposes.
CLOSING: Life becomes fruitful as we surrender ourselves to God and carry out His will. By allowing His Spirit to live through us (Galatians 2:20), we will find our lives characterized by significance and satisfaction.

1 Peter 2:21-23
He has provided the example, it is up to us to follow it.

Instructions
Warren Wiersbe observed, "When the child of God looks into the Word of God, he sees the Son of God. And, he is transformed by the Spirit of God to share in the glory of God." God's Holy Word is, indeed, a transforming, life-changing, one-of-a-kind treasure. And it's up to you...and only you...to use it that way.
The vigor of our spiritual lives will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our lives and in our thoughts.

Obeying God
Peter was a professional fisherman. He knew how to gauge weather conditions, where to find the best places to fish, and when to end an unproductive night. Because of his expertise, he may have silently questioned the reasonableness of Jesus' instruction. Why let down the nets when an experienced team of fisherman hadn't caught anything all night?
Sometimes God asks His children to act in ways that appear unreasonable. His request might involve leaving a job or ministry that He provided only recently, taking on more responsibility when life already feels overloaded, or accepting an assignment that seems better suited for someone with a different skill set. Perhaps God's plan makes no sense in view of age, financial situation, or health condition. Yet, because of the One who asks, it will be the absolutely right thing to do. We have to decide whether to do what is sensible by human standards or to obey God.
The Bible talks about many people who had to make such a choice. Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son Issac. Noah was told to build an ark on dry land becasue a flood was coming. Joshua was given a military strategy of marching around Jericho instead of attacking it (Joshua 6:2-5). Gideon, the inexperienced fighter, was told to send most of his warriors home before the battle (Judges 7:2-3). They all obeyed and experienced God's power released on their behalf.
CLOSING: Don't let human logic dictate whether you follow God's plan. Trust in Him as Peter and these other faithful believers did.

The Believer's Repentance
Today many churches place a lot of emphasis on confession. This often happens at the expense of a proper understanding of repentance. Confession of sin is mentioned twice in the New Testament in James 5:16 and 1 John 1:9, but repentance is talked about a lot more. It is important for us to be careful not to confuse the two, because a believer can confess without repentance but can't repent without confession.
It is possible to feel sorry and confess our sins but change nothing. Repentance means taking responsibility for sin and committing to change a wrong action or attitude (work to stop committing that sin). This is essential for spiritual growth. True confession (when we agree with God's perspective about our transgression) goes hand in hand with repentance. If we know that God hates what we are doing, we will stop.
By confessing and repenting, the believer accepts responsibility for getting rid of his or her life of sin through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' ready forgiveness shouldn't be treated like the Monopoly "get out of jail free" card! We have to do more than casually say, "Lord, I've messed up again...I'm sorry." To win over habitual sin, we have to resist temptation and obey God. Satan will continue to harass us, and we may fail again, but we should keep up sincere confession and repentance until God gives us victory over our sin.
Closing: Repentance isn't feeling sorry or claiming weakness in the face of temptation. It's a condition wherein our spirit understands the Lord's grief over sin, grieves with Him, and commits to changing behavior to please Him.

The Ultimate Rejection
According to Jesus, the gate to heaven is narrow. The easier route through life is the broad pathway of secular happiness, with all of its side roads to decadence and self-indulgence. But the way to eternal life is marked by self-sacrifice and humility.
The Lord warned His followers not to be deceived about their salvation. Those who find heaven's road have given their heart to Jesus and acknowledged that His sacrificial death paid their sin-deb in full. This is important because we meet many people who appear to be walking the narrow path though they have never actually made a decision for Christ. These people may be busy with church work, but they have placed performance before commitment. Their activities may be commendable--such as volunteering in ministries and supporting missions--and they may even hold some right beliefs. But actions and thoughts aren't always an accurate reflection of the spirit and heart.
Many churchgoers assume their works are so pleasing to God that heaven is a certainty; sadly, they will be stunned by the ultimate rejection. At the judgment, Jesus will tell them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23). Jesus will not accept anyone who has refused to be forgiven for his or her sins.
You don't want to be among those who think deeds earn admission to heaven. Receiving Christ as Savior is the only way (John 14:6). Then you can be sure that at the end of life's journey, you'll step off the narrow road and into God's presence forever (1 John 5:13).

The Key to Acceptance
Many people that go to church are alarmed to find out that ministry work does not earn a place in heaven. Good deeds mean nothing to God unless they are the result of a relationship with Him. Only those who have received Jesus Christ as their Savior will enter heaven, no matter how many acts of kindness or charity they have performed.
The definition of the word "believe" is what often confuses church members who lack genuine faith. They believe in God, Jesus, and heaven. But there's a difference between giving intellectual assent to an idea and spiritually acknowledging Christ as God's Son and one's own personal Savior. In the Bible, every time someone truly believes in Jesus, he or she changes. It is impossible to remain the same after realizing one's desperate need for Him.
An earnest desire for salvation begins with the recognition that we have sinned against God. We must also be aware that there is no hope of salvation apart from the Lord. Having understood these two facts, we need to trust in His sacrifice for the payment of our sin-debt. Some people use the terminology "ask Jesus to forgive your sin" or "ask Jesus into your heart." It doesn't matter how we describe the experience--if we repent of sin and make a decision to receive Christ, we are saved.
God promises to respond to a humble acknowledgment of His Son's sacrifice. If you desire to be in heaven with Him for eternity, ask yourself this question: Have I been saved? If not, now is the time.

Nice Story in an email I received...
The doors opened and I was instructed to come in and have a seat by the defense table.
As I looked around I saw the 'prosecutor.'
He was a villainous looking gent who snarled as he stared at me.
He definitely was the most evil person I have ever seen.
I sat down and looked to my left and there sat My Attorney, a kind and gentle looking man whose appearance seemed so familiar to me, I felt I knew Him.
The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full flowing robes.
He commanded an awesome presence as He moved across the room I couldn't take my eyes off of Him.
As He took His seat behind the bench, He said, 'Let us begin.'
The prosecutor rose and said, 'My name is Satan and I am here to show you why this man belongs in hell.'
He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I stole, and In the past when I cheated others Satan told of other horrible Perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank.
I was so embarrassed that I couldn't look at anyone, even my own Attorney, as the Devil told of sins that even I had completely forgotten about.
As upset as I was at Satan for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at My Attorney who sat there silently not offering any form of defense at all.
I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had done some good in my life - couldn't that at least equal out part of the harm I'd done?
Satan finished with a fury and said, 'This man belongs in hell, he is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise.'
When it was His turn, My Attorney first asked if He might approach the bench.
The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of Satan, and beckoned Him to come forward.
As He got up and started walking, I was able to see Him in His full splendor and majesty.
I realized why He seemed so familiar; this was Jesus representing me, my Lord and my Savior! He stopped at the bench and softly said to the Judge, 'Hi, Dad,' and then He turned to address the court.
'Satan was correct in saying that this man had sinned, I won't deny any of these allegations.
And, yes, the wage of sin is death, and this man deserves to be punished.'
Jesus took a deep breath and turned to His Father with outstretched arms and proclaimed, 'However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and he has accepted Me as his Savior, so he is Mine.' My Lord continued with, 'His name is written in the Book of Life, and no one can snatch him from Me.
Satan still does not understand yet. This man is not to be given justice, but rather mercy.' As Jesus sat down, He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said, 'There is nothing else that needs to be done.' 'I've done it all.' The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down. The following words bellowed from His lips... 'This man is free.' The penalty for him has already been paid in full. 'Case dismissed.'
As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving, 'I won't give up, I will win the next one.' I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, 'Have you ever lost a case?'
Christ lovingly smiled and said, 'Everyone that has come to Me and asked Me to represent them has received the same verdict as you, ~Paid In Full~

Forgiven and Forgotten
But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Meeting with God
It is possible to fill our lives with spiritual information and activities--all of which are good--but fail to develop a close relationship with the Lord. Take a quick inventory to see if this might be true of you: Do you attend church only out of a sense of duty? Do you pray with lofty or repetitive words rather than speaking to God from the heart? Do you serve solely out of obligation?
In Scripture, we read about many people whose personal encounter with the Lord was energizing and life-changing. Abraham, Gideon, Moses, and Paul were just a few who spoke with Him one-on-one (Genesis 7:4; Judges 6:12, 14; Exodus 3:2; Acts 9:3-6). We probably don't expect dramatic "burning bush" experiences today, yet all believers should still have precious, intimate times with God. Whenever we open His Word and invite the Holy Spirit to illuminate its meaning, we can hear directly from our heavenly Father.
The Bible tells us, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8). Walking closely with the Lord takes commitment and time. Start now by dedicating a portion of your day to meeting with your Friend.
